vCenter 5.5 vDS Backup and Restore FTW!!

So as part of my previous post regarding vCenter Heartbeat Installation, I was forced to create a new vCenter server and migrate the existing hosts. I knew it will be a pain to go over the configurations once more. One of the dreaded tasks is to reconfigure the Distributed Virtual Switches and their corresponding portgroups.

Fortunately, starting vSphere 5.1, you can now backup and restore your ditributed switches and their portgroups. Just do an Export Configuration of the VDS on the old vCenter  and you can then import it or do a Restore Configuration in the new vCenter server and BOOM!! vDS and portgroups will show up like magic 🙂 You just have to add back the hosts into the restored vDS and you’re back in business…

Here is the KB article to learn more about this cool feature: http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=2034602
